Ramadan – a moveable feast
Have you checked whether any of the events you’re holding this year coincide with a religious observance or holiday? This year Ramadan nearly caused a few ramifications for us!
In September we organised 14 regional meetings across the UK which were due to take place on the evening of the 9th September – right in the middle of Ramadan. The meetings were scheduled to start at 7pm and a welcome buffet was being provided beforehand. Muslims attending the meetings were due to break their fast at 7pm – just as the meetings were about to start, which would have meant they missed out on the buffet.
To ensure they were catered for we contacted each of the 14 venues and made separate arrangements for the buffet to be made available to anyone who was fasting until 7pm. This included plating up dinners for participants to eat during the break and getting permission for participants to take their meal into the meeting with them.
Ramadan is quite literally a moveable feast. The dates vary each year according to the Hijri lunar calendar. Do any of the events you’ve scheduled this year coincide with a religious observance or holiday? It’s wise to double check!
